Many recognise a trip to London's Westminster area as one of the most important, iconic things to do while visiting the city. This section of the immense sprawl that London is has, alone, myriad things to see and do - so what's exactly on offer in Westminster?

Easily accessible by tube stations, Westminster is home to many of London's most famous landmarks. For example, the impassive Big Ben towers skywards in this area and, beside it, the gorgeous Westminster Abbey as well as the striking palace of Westminster - also known as the Houses of Parliament.

Built over 150 years ago, Big Ben still remains one of the world's tallest free standing clock towers. It makes for a majestic photo opportunity, particularly when taken as part of larger Westminster photos on spots along the south bank of the River Thames. The clock overlooks the Houses of Parliament, another iconic Westminster building where many of Britain's political decisions are made. Only UK citizens are permitted access to the interior of this building, and even then it is only through acquiring a ticket to attend a debate - but if you are from the UK and have the chance to attend, it is well worthwhile. The interior of the Houses of Parliament is astounding, with gorgeous internal architecture that easily matches the exterior, and fantastic furniture and decorations.

Back outside, Westminster Abbey is a favourite amongst tourists. Its breathtaking Gothic design has had many a photo snapped of it and is known for its position as the final resting place of many British monarchs of the Commonwealth Realms, as well as being where coronations have been held.

Moving deeper around Westminster, there are many more attractions to behold. For example, Downing Street is just around the corner - the street where number 10 marks the famous street entrance to the Prime Minister's residence. Beyond that is the beautiful Saint James' Park and, once you have traversed its idyllic pathways, the majestic Buckingham Palace.

Buckingham Palace is The Queen's official residence and this building alone has several attractions. You can catch a glimpse of the changing of the guard ceremony, which takes place daily or every second day at around 11am. A grand Military Band drums in the change as full sets of new palace guards replace the old ones in order to begin their day's shift watching over the palace. If you want to watch true British military style, this event is a must see.

The palace itself makes way for plenty of photographic opportunities and is one of the quintessential London experiences.

Westminster alone is an area in London you can truly immerse yourself in, with so much to see and do. By the time you return to your
